The day's events had left Mr. Johnson with a profound sense of emptiness. He felt hollowed out, as if everything had been wrung from him. He couldn’t seem to gather himself, and felt a heavy lethargy.

He discovered a large, unmarked envelope in his mailbox. Inside, he found a collection of handwritten letters from his former students, expressing gratitude and admiration. There was also a gift certificate for a massage. A note read: "We appreciate you, Mr. Johnson."

He smiled, a genuine smile, for the first time that day. He considered the gift certificate and how it might help.
